A night at Slick Willy's, Dunedin

After a week of seemingly perpetual studying and learning we decided we absolutely MUST socialise. Aps took us to a Fringe Festival volunteer meeting, where we were blindfolded and trained to deal with irate show-goers. It was rather bizarre but it's the Fringe Festival...oddity is NEVER filtered out.

Later, Aps pulled Charlotte and I along to a popular Dunedin clothing store called 'Slick Willy's' which was having a celebrate-the-new-season party. Here we lavished looove onto those beautiful red velvet cupcakes (we had forgotten what real food tastes like) and sipped Chardonnay while chatting to local artists, the store owners and of course, April's absolute idols, the cute designers from 27 Names.

Aps' cheeks went red with delight at this oh-so-suaaave night.

Much love monday

Happy much love monday!

We've been really slack with much love monday recently but here is today's:

Today/for a long time I love and envy the all girl band The Like for their retro rock music and style. I love the photos James D. Kelly has, on his blog has gorgeous black and white photos of celebs and of the girls from The Like, and some especially of pretty organ player Annie Monroe of The Like.

I really love polka-dots toooo. A few photos of a skirt I made recently. If you remember I had that fabric which I had planned to make a skirt of anyway, but I came across that photo of Annie in a polka-dot skirt and since she's my new idol/girl-crush I made it inspired/just like her's. Oh she's so pretty.
I also (only this once, slightly materialistic-ly) love macs.
This is my desk at the moment. Yes, I now have a macbook pro for university. Yaayyyyyyyyyyyyy maaaacsss.

Sorry about the rant. What do you love today?

georgia, oh georgia

sweeeet geoooorgia. this is me 'blogging and running' (maybe i do blog and actually run) with this absolutely gorgeous old school song; georgia on my mind by ray charles. a year or two ago i played this in concert band at high school, it's so empowering to play with a full band of soulful saxs, trumpets and the brass strong in general. oh and the piano, ray charles, brother, you're cool. with all this shizz like autotune around these days, this is geniune music. amazing flute part too, if only i could play like that. respect.

this is me pulling an april

Aps tends to blog and run (hahaha not literally silly) so I'm gonna do that. Here's a nice song. Listen to it. (I nearly touched one of the band members. They were discreetly hanging about in the crowd at a Neil Young concert I went to and I ran at them, unfortunately they ran away.) Hehehe.

Rolling Stones Magazine gave this album (Dear Science) album of the year so you know it's legit. ;)

a particularly stylish knight

There is a constant debate between old vs new and traditional vs contemporary. It's even in politics with Liberal vs Conservative. So when it comes to fashion photography, who is winning this argument? Does there need to be a winner or can both work side by side? In this post I have examples of Nick Knight's work for the fashion industry. Nick Knight totally encaptures that modern, brutal love concept that challenges the viewers to watch and admire his/the designer's creations. His work is terrifying, inspiring and new age romantic but is it too much for you? In my next post I'll be blogging about Bill Cunningham who is THE traditional capturing-fashion-in-the-moment photographer; totally realist and charming. In the comparison of these two creator's works perhaps you'll get that one step closer to understanding what you connect with most in the visual world.

Disturbed by the above video? Slow down man and watch this short film about a flower.

Stay tuned.

Could punk be any more desirable?

There are some people on this Earth who just have that raw cool factor etched into their bones. One person amongst those rare people who have the 'alluring factor' is Patti Smith. She is an American singer-songwriter, poet and visual artist who some insist on nicknaming the, 'Godmother of Punk'. Patti was also named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture, and in 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As you can see she is not only of 'supreme cool' status but also, she has an impressive repertoire. Patti is the type of drink that you love, hate and constantly want more of; she is a lethal punk cocktail filled with metal studs, ripped clothing and scraggly perfection.

This is the song, 'Horses' by Patti Smith and it'll certainly remind you of who you are (especially if you're a romantic teen wanting to be that someone, somewhere rather than that no one nowhere)

Be a wild horse for a day...or two.

Exit Through the Gift Shop

I have to keep this post fairly short but oh my gosh, I just went to a film for the New Zealand International Film Festival and I could swear it is now one of my top favourite documentaries. It was originally a documentary made by this CRAZY French guy called Thierry but then Banksy (a total idol of mine) decided to take over and make it about Thierry. Can I just clarify how MAD this Thierry character is? ABSOFROCKINLUTELY. He says, "I can't play chess, but I think life is a game of chess." and other such hilarious things.

Plus I am fascinated by graffiti art and so on a creative side this film was totally inspiring. Also in regards to Banksy, he is articulate (despite his voice being changed as he didn't want to be reveled) he is mysterious, amazingly talented and an advocate for human rights in his own unique and BRILLIANT way.

Check out the trailer for 'Exit Through the Gift Shop'. Honestly the whole theatre was laughing and raving about it afterwards. It's wonderful.

Ha!

Maybe get creative.
